Why do I need a certified appraisal?
  • To establish market value
  • For insurance purposes
  • For legal matters such as:  estate settlements, wills, business partnerships and agreements, divorce, bankruptcy, charitable
donations, tax matters, civil litigation, and injuries
  • Bank financing
  • Sales or transfers

What factors affect the value of my horse?
  • Physical traits such as age, health, and conformation
  • Performance record
  • Proven level of training
  • Disposition
  • Breed and Pedigree
  • Market
  • Accomplishments of offspring
  • Factors that don't affect value include: emotional attachment; perceived value; and costs of ownership such as, board, feed,
    veterinarian, and maintenance.

 What does an appraisal include?
  • All appraisals are developed and written in accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
These are the same standards used by real estate appraisers
  • The appraisal process includes an on-site inspection, analysis of the subject horse, comparison of the subject horse to other similar
horses in the relevant market and analysis of the relevant market
  • The appraisal is a detailed and bound report containing a full description and photos of the subject horse, a statement of the
intended use of the appraisal, the type of value, summary of facts upon which the value was determined, and a statement of
conclusion reached, including any limitations or qualifications that affected the conclusion

As the horse owner or client, what is my responsibility once an appraisal is scheduled?
  • Provide a copy of all available records pertaining to the horse and any offspring to the appraiser (your appraiser will advise what
    specific documents will be required)
  • Be prepared to handle the horse yourself or designate an authorized agent (such as a trainer) who will be responsible for handling
and, if required, to ride the horse during the on-site inspection, proving the horse is suitable for the purpose stated

What if my case has to go to court?
  • Please consult an attorney
  • Consultation, testimony, and/or disposition concerning the appraisal are provided at an additional fee for time and expenses
